About the Book

Fitzwilliam Darcy has spent years guarding a secret—one that could cost him everything.

Resigned to a solitary existence, Darcy has long accepted that love and marriage are luxuries beyond his reach. But when a chance encounter on the Yorkshire moors proves impossible to forget, the life he has so carefully constructed slowly begins to unravel.

Years later, drawn into Hertfordshire society by his friend Charles Bingley, Darcy crosses paths with Miss Elizabeth Bennet—clever, spirited, and unafraid to challenge him at every turn. Yet as his attraction to Elizabeth deepens, so does the fear that winning her affection would mean exposing a truth he has long kept hidden.

Unable to endure the agony of watching Bingley pursue the woman he loves, Darcy flees—but fate has other plans. When unexpected circumstances bring Elizabeth to Pemberley, his restraint is tested like never before.

Torn between duty and desire, Darcy must decide: will he cling to the barriers he has spent a lifetime building, or risk everything for the one woman he cannot forget?

Part of the Love Conquers Pride series.

Lovely storyline with a bit of mystery

I enjoyed the evolution of ODC’s relationship. We only learn about Wickham second-hand. None of Elizabeth’s family are much involved in the second half of the book. The mystery comes to light and plays a part in the resolution of ODC.

Couldn’t put it down

It was a very long road to happily ever after for our couples. But the story kept my interest all the way.story It was low angst. I liked how it was Lizzy who was steadfast and Darcy wasn’t as proud for as long.

Altogether differently pleasant

Such a relief to have less of the Benet mother and little sister for once. I feel incapable to express myself after reading the so skilfull words of the author. I remained in the atmosphere of the story in the warmth of their sentiments, I liked the way the author solved the necessary rearrangement of the beloved characters. A warm heartfelt story. Loved it❤️

Good read

This story is well-written, and I liked it, but I didn't love it. The first part of the story drags on for too long, the second part seems rushed at the end.

What is Darcy’s secret?

4 1/2 stars rounded up to 5Overall, this is a sweet love story that has Darcy and Elizabeth falling for each other but Darcy has a secret that will keep them apart. This opens up with Darcy and Elizabeth, though neither shares their real name, years prior to canon. Both secretly fall for the other, but after a few days apart, they are separated again until they come across each other years later in a ballroom in London. The sticky part is Elizabeth is unofficially being courted by Bingley. And for those wondering, no, he has not met Jane yet. And those that need the spoiler that yes the appropriate primary canon couples get together. Beyond that there are a fun few twist to canon. We have several new non-canon characters that are an excellent addition to the story. Both Darcy and Elizabeth have to journey through things especially when Darcy is required to tell Elizabeth about his secret. How will this knowledge change things? The audiobook was wonderfully narrated by the talented Stevie Zimmerman, who allows you to lose yourself in the story. Overall a worthwhile read/listen.

Great variation

Terrific variation. Elizabeth is wonderful, and Darcy's challenge is very adeptly done. The book is engaging and very well written.

A wonderful variation of Jane’s original P&P

This story is based on our familiar characters but the story follows a different path. Darcy and Elizabeth met earlier than expected and there are some complications that delay their courtship. The book is beautifully written and the readers will have a hard time putting it down. This is truly a Darcy and Elizabeth story. The other characters come and go but it is definitely written from D & L’s perspective. I enjoyed their trip to Ireland and the success they found there. No epilogue but a great ending. I do enjoy this author. I’ve read several of her books and enjoyed all of them very much.

very good

Interesting! Not many stories about sleeping sickness so definitely a unique P&P variation. But still a happy ending without too much time spent on the villains

Low angst, light feathery feeling sort of story.I enjoyed it. It is a clean one too which Austen lovers will like. I like more steam in my books...

The author has outdone herself.

Oh my heart. The story grabbed me from the very beginning, and what a wonderful, mysterious, sweet little prologue it was.We know very soon that something plagues Fitzwilliam Darcy, an illness? Physical or psychological we don’t know yet soon enough we suspect what it is.Darcy meets Elizabeth again years later at a ball and many complications occur out of this meeting. Elizabeth is as captivated as he is but he leaves immediately after dancing one dance filled with uncomfortable conversation.Bingley is there at the ball escorting Elizabeth whom he has been calling upon frequently, looking like for everyone to observe they will be courting soon. What? Lizzy and Bingley? The story then travels along canon scenes with Netherfield being let, Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam visiting. Miss Bingley clinging and cloying and sneering at Eliza. With the addition of a new character who stays with Darcy everywhere he goes we’re thinking we may know what Darcy is suffering from. Darcy’s avowal to never marry adds to the questionsThe plot is so well written. Beautifully edited. The story is incredibly moving sometimes and heartbreaking other times. I cannot express how much I loved it, with all the angst but with all the love too. I loved the way Jane and Bingley’s story worked out. Loved the much better life the author gave Charlotte. And even Miss Bingley. But of course we’re completely invested in Darcy and Elizabeth and how in the world the author is going to bring them to their happily ever after. And she does! Whew! Sigh. Highly recommend.

Refreshing read, with a lovely outcome, bringing the struggles of a young man with a terrible secret to understand there is a future and place for him in life, with a caring beautiful woman.

Darcy Keeps You Guessing

This variation grabs you from the beginning. Who was the 'Jane' that Darcy met? Why did he like walking over riding? Why was he determined not to marry? So many questions and few answers until at least halfway through! But the answers do come and satisfyingly.Very well written.

Enchanting tale of love and understanding

Lovely story with a different set of circumstances, and some interesting original ones, with references to the usual villains but the appearance of only one, and not for long. The love story between our dear couple is remarkable and so very sweet!

Darcy is Afraid and Determined Not to Marry, Even as He Loves Elizabeth

This is a very realistic book on how fear can rule in a person’s life. Darcy has met Elizabeth at a roadside inn, four years prior to the events of the original P&P, but the interaction is fleeting, and they do not know how to find each other again, no matter how they wish it were to be.Darcy searches, but he doesn’t want to find (though he desperately wishes to) because he is afraid – afraid of where such a meeting might lead. He is determined never to marry because of what a marriage might bring. He is determined to have Georgiana marry as soon as possible so that he can then abandon Pemberley move out of the country. He does this out of love for her – all without involving her in his decisions (which doesn’t help). Bingley is also searching for an estate to let, and he meets Elizabeth in London. He falls in love with her at first sight (an angel!). But then he meets Jane, who shares many of his interests. What is he to do? Read the book and find out (it’s a page-turner!)Why? What compels him? There are clues to at least two likely possibilities which are presented in the book. Both are reasonable, and both, given the knowledge of the day, would prevent him from marrying Elizabeth or any other woman, one by choice and one by necessity. I figured it out, especially given that Miss Bingley settled on one option.Fear is a useful servant but a terrible master. Darcy’s fear has separated him from those he loves and those he might love. Though things don’t end up perfectly well, Darcy learns to manage his fears (with the help of someone who loves him). This is the first book that I’ve read by Jennifer Altman, and lucky for me, it won’t be my last (she’s written a three book “Love Conquers Pride” series).

Nice

I enjoyed this story. It was nice to read a story where Elizabeth and Darcy have open, honest conversations with each other. This aspect did not detract from the conflict but added to it. I just wished for more of E&D once they had chosen one another.

The Utmost Struggle

This was sad in many respects but also joyful. To find that the magnificent Darcy had a health issue that drew him down and came between him and Elizabeth was difficult to read. I guessed the possible ailment and knowing there is no cure, I wondered how the couple would overcome this. But they do, in part because of Elizabeth’s determination to have the man she loves. Well worth reading especially as along with a wonderful story, the book has been proofread well, so nothing slows or stops the reader. Enjoy.

Good story

I did enjoy this book, the characters are well drawn and the plot is refreshingly different. There are edits (it will take a bit of time for the author to avoid the modern language which is so out of place in the 19th century setting. One of the things that I really appreciated is the lack of nasty attitudes and prolonged misunderstandings.

Darcy had a secret that very few knew

Darcy first meets a young Miss in 1807. They will meet again in 1811. Elizabeth was already half in love with the memory of the man from the Yorkshire moor. However, she was ‘sort of’ being courted by Mr. Bingley by the time his friend, Mr. Darcy, arrived for the Meryton Assembly, oh, dear. It would take Darcy and Elizabeth time to sort out their love for each other. Lover’s angst is hard to read. The reader can see both sides of the issue, but the characters cannot. They have to work out their issues before they can come together

A different story

I enjoyed this well written story about Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam. The variation was well thought out and clever. It has an interesting beginning, one where younger versions of our heroes meet by accident and how it impacts both of their lives.

That was a very interesting story. It goes to show that ,even in there time illness were just being understand. There lives are like many today, the uncertain that life may being. Thanks again for this outstanding contribution and fantastic story of Elizabeth and Darcy and other members.

Well-written without all the usual tropes

The author can write! I didn’t notice any errors, anachronisms, or bad grammar. I enjoy her writing style and intend to read her other books. It is so refreshing to read a book that moves along without the extra padding of page after page of the characters thinking about their emotions and repeating their thoughts over and over again. The author did write about their thoughts, but she didn’t dwell on them like many others do. I didn’t need to skip any pages. The plot takes a different turn than the original. You are left wondering what Darcy’s secret is but you don’t have to wait till the end. The storyline is coherent without a bunch of unnecessary side characters and subplots. It is a study of the love they share and the burden Darcy has instead of miscommunications, misconceptions, and the usual tropes. Darcy is depicted as he is in canon, instead of behaving like a love sick puppy pouring out pages of dialogue about his love for Elizabeth. It’s not mushy, and I appreciate that. The same with Elizabeth, who is not perfect but stays mostly within her original character.I rarely give 5 stars, and I gladly do so for such a well-written book.

Sensitive, touching and well researched and written. One of the best P&P fanfic I have ever read. I was afflicted with epilepsy at age 9 some 140 years after the date of this story. I came through a few years later as I reached puberty. It was a source of much confusion and fear for me and my family. My younger sister had to walk me to school. My mother consulted many paediatricians The doctor who finally helped me to control the frequency and severity of the episodes later became the director of medical and health services in our city and subsequently founded the medical school in a new university.

Unputdownable

An early meeting for our dear couple that is nearly love at first sight, but without exchanging details of who they are, leads to years of pining before they meet again when Bingley is pursuing Elizabeth in London prior to taking Netherfield. Darcy is unwilling to pursue Elizabeth for reasons that remain a mystery, and Elizabeth is left to ponder his character as he puzzles her exceedingly. The story stays very close to Darcy and Elizabeth while they struggle through their personal baggage. This is an excellent Darcy and Elizabeth centered story that is beautifully written, well paced, presents a unique obstacle for Darcy, and delivers a satisfying HEA that allows Elizabeth's inherent loyalty to shine.

New and intriguing plot for our favorite characters

I've read a lot (!!) of Pride and Prejudice variations and many fall into the standard plot patterns. But Jennifer Altman's story took me by surprise as being something new and unexpected. I am proud to say that I didn't skip ahead to see how it would turn out but diligently read the story in order! Yay me! Well done, dear author!

inventive plot

This novel is an engaging story with a plot I hadn’t read before, which is saying something if one reads in this genre often. The mystery surrounding Darcy’s “secret” I found a bit eye-rolling at times. That an illness that has been made more benign by modern medicine was at the heart of the mystery took me awhile to accept as believable but that had everything to do with me and not the writing. In fact it seemed the thing that required the greatest suspension of disbelief was that anyone at all was aware of, and accepting of, Elizabeth’s Yorkshire uncle. Although the contrast with Darcy was apropos.

Great writing, evocative storytelling, and full of longing and determination. Loved Lizzy especially but all the characters are well developed.
