About the Book
Inspiration for E!’s TV series The Royals and winner of the Bank Street College of Education’s Award for Best Novel, Michelle Ray’s latest work brings Ophelia’s story into the twenty-first century. Told through a hotly anticipated talk show interview, a hostile police interrogation, and Ophelia’s own intimate narration, OPHELIA: LIVE reimagines Shakespeare’s tragedy for a world of cameras, clicks, and instant judgment.
Holding tight to the core plot and iconic conversations of Hamlet, Ray asks what might drive a contemporary Ophelia caught in the royal family’s web of lies if she had a sharp sense of humor, a fierce visual imagination, and absolutely no intention of killing herself: “I would paint daggers because I could use none.” As she juggles her senior year of high school, a protective father, and the chaos of dating a prince under constant media surveillance, Ophelia is pulled into the storm of Hamlet’s grief and unraveling sanity after his father’s sudden, suspicious death.
When the violence at Elsinore Castle finally explodes onto the world stage, everyone wants to know how Ophelia survived—not just the scandal, but the boy she loved and the crown that tried to define her. OPHELIA: LIVE is the story of what happens when a girl the world expects to drown decides instead to tell the truth.

As a huge fan of Falling for Hamlet and its fun E! television adaptation, I immediately snatched up this new release from Michelle Ray. This modern reimagining of Ophelia’s story is absolutely compelling, blending smart writing and intelligent humor with a sharp critique of contemporary media culture.
I loved this book. Always had little interest in language of Shakespeare. I will refer to this book as Shakespeare for Dummies or The Unsophisticated. Congrats Michelle. Really loved it.
Such a fun, smart interpretation of Shakespeare! As an infrequent fiction reader, I breezed through Michelle Ray’s Ophelia Live & genuinely hated to put it down.
I cannot wait to give my daughter this gift!! She loves Shakespeare. We're going to read it together. :-)
I really loved this book, it's a great way into the story of Hamlet for everyone who thinks Ophelia got the short end of the stick. This is modern fiction for fans of classics, both teens and adults, something Ray excels at.
Michelle Ray not only believes Shakespeare is for everybody, she also works brilliantly to make it accessible and entertaining for everybody!
This is a must read for teens and their parents alike! Ophelia: Live is a fabulous modern-day retelling of Hamlet from the female perspective. Well-written and enjoyable - I highly recommend this book. Michelle Ray has done it again!

Super fun read! Great to follow the old story in modern times! Definitely worth it!
Ophelia: Live is an absolute triumph. It is witty, sharp, accessible to young adults. and filled with social commentary. The modern retelling of Hamlet from Ophelia's point of view is not just entertaining, it is empowering to readers. I cannot recommend enough as a companion to Hamlet.
I have always felt like Shakespeare didn’t make sense to me. Michelle Ray makes this classic accessible and entertaining. Her writing captivates and holds my attention so I forget where I am and become part of the book!
