About the Book

What if you had a second chance to make a first impression?

When Elizabeth Bennet suffers an unexpected accident while visiting her friend Charlotte Collins in Kent, she wakes to a world subtly—yet profoundly—altered. Friendships, family ties, and first encounters are no longer as she remembers: Mr Darcy is a stranger she meets for the first time at Rosings, Jane’s circumstances have taken an unexpected turn, and a mysterious locket hints at a future she cannot fully comprehend.

As Elizabeth struggles to reconcile memories that refuse to align, she is drawn into a world both familiar and strange, where every exchange with Mr Darcy offers new insight into the man she once thought she understood. Yet each revelation brings the disquieting awareness that her former life is slipping away. And the harder she clings to her fading recollections, the more swiftly they recede.

Caught between two realities, Elizabeth must discover which truths to trust—and whether love can endure across the fragile boundaries of time.

Some Little Alteration is a spellbinding Pride and Prejudice variation, perfect for readers who enjoy stories that blend mystery, romance, and the enduring power of love.

Part of the Love Conquers Pride series.

Enchanting

I enjoyed this variation very much. It could always have a little passion, but it kept me interested from start to finish.

4.5 Stars

An entertaining read. I enjoyed all the strange happenings at Rosings. Good chemistry between Darcy and Elizabeth. After the main characters left Rosings, I skimmed the next few chapters (Elizabeth's longing), but the story picked up again once Darcy returned.

This was a lovely feel-good read. Beautifully written. Highly recommended.
SPOILERS: A charmed locket and a knock on the head lead to Elizabeth waking in an alternate reality where Jane is Mrs Collins and Darcy is engaged to Anne! Over two weeks, she has the chance to see the real Darcy, rather than the one she thinks she knows from the insult and Wickham’s lies.

An original variation with A Christmas Carol vibes

This variation is one of the most novel, original stories this reader has ever read. Although many other comments would mention this story akin to Groundhog Day, it feels more like Charles Dickens’ as Christmas Carol or the movie Sliding Doors. But instead of three ghosts, past present and future, Elizabeth Bennet was shown an alternative universe that made her realize that her life would not be worth living without Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy as her life companion. A must-read for all JAFF lovers, who love originality and unexpected twists. One thing is emphasized in this story for sure: that Fitzwilliam Darcy’s abs Elizabeth Bennet’s love story transcends time, place, distance and even dimensions.

A parallel reality tale

On their way to Hunsford, Sir William, Elizabeth, and Maria stop in a town where a street fair is taking place. Elizabeth is attracted to a locket, sold by a lady traveler. The latter enigmatically says, "Once a memory settles, its roots grow deep. One path will become truth, and the other will fade. See that you choose yours wisely. It made little sense to her at the time, but it foretells the story." Elizabeth is injured in a rainstorm at Rosings Park and awakens to an alternate reality. It isn't amnesia. She has walked into a parallel world, where parts of her life are as she remembers, and others are shockingly different. It would seem that this plot would be difficult to carry off, but the author does it effortlessly. It's riveting! While at first it would seem to be a fate vs free will story, it's really a combination of the two. Well-written and quite remarkable.

Two in one

I received two stories in one with double satisfaction. A charming book without some of the regular annoying characters. It was like watching a life from the window. She sees and knows the people but is unable to really participate. Lovely ❤️

I had a difficult time following the middle chapters for some time, but I enjoyed less drama.

I would recommend this P and P variation to beginners to Pride and Prejudice variations. A good introduction. I would have liked an Epilogue.

Alternative timeline story

Round up to 4.5 Stars. This is a what-if scenario done very well. It gives almost Groundhog Day vibes, or if you've read a lot of JAFF, it's very similar to Anngela Schroeder's "A Life Worth Choosing". Right after Darcy delivers his letter to Elizabeth in a grove in Kent, the weather takes a turn for the worse. Elizabeth is caught in the storm and knocked unconscious. When she wakes, she finds herself in a parlor in Rosings Park, having been carried there by Mr. Darcy himself, and being cared for by Mrs. Collins - Mrs. Jane Collins. Elizabeth is horrified by this development. As time goes on, she realizes she has entered another version of her life - one where Mr. Bingley never leased Netherfield, and thus didn't meet Jane until after she had married Mr. Collins. Elizabeth and Darcy also do not meet until Elizabeth's trip to Kent to visit her sister in the springtime. Elizabeth is desperate to get back to her original life, to save Jane from such a fate, but Mr. Darcy in this timeline is so attentive to her. All of her misgivings about his character have faded away, and she finds herself falling in love with him. This is a really engaging story. It's more about the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth, and Elizabeth's journey to recognize her own faults and misunderstandings and correct them. While the circumstances surrounding her situation do cause Elizabeth a lot of anxiety, she is much more concerned with her relationships and introspection. I reduced half a star because I did feel that some of the situations in the middle of the book started getting a bit repetitive.

Time slip

A time slip after an accident shows other paths, other circumstances. A mysterious locket bears secrets that are never fully known. An alternative journey leads to a delayed but chosen end. I like best that Elizabeth needed to reassess judgments of herself and others in order to choose.

Great Read

Great story & fun to read. What if??? Do all roads lead to Darcy? To Jane’s happiness? It could have been longer but otherwise a great read.

A head injury and now Elizabeth cannot sort out which memories are true.

Spell binding! I was kept in suspense as to just how a HEA would be achieved as we are given two different stories of Elizabeth's and Darcy's relationship. Most of this is set in Hunsford, as Elizabeth visits there and meets Darcy. The story is mostly set after the proposal but we have flashbacks as Elizabeth seems to have two different sets of memories as to how they met, Jane & Bingley's relationship, etc. after suffering an injury to her head.

A Rare Five Star Book

A rare well told and lovely story. Well paced, with Beautiful prose and evocative dialog. And as an additional gift, sans the plethora of typos, wrong words, and point of view errors so often present. Just a wonderful, second chance trope story - complete and satisfying.

Haunting yet beautiful

At first the story seemed stilted and strange, but then I really fell in love with it. Good writing and a strong plot line.

Good read

It is a well-written story, but since, I could not see how such a story would be possible, that made me take away a star. I don't believe in magic or reincarnation.

This story is one of a kind! I loved it! The details were intriguing and kept you reading. You could actually feel the discuss Lizzy felt seeing Jane and Mr. Collins together!

I loved this

This is a wonderful book. One of my favorite tropes is when a little magic intervenes and this was a delightful take on that. Characters were true to cannon but it was interesting and sweet.

One confusing read.

I was always eager to read this writer's works, but this one left me disappointed. I do not undertand what was going on, what caused Elizabeth to experience an alternative reality in which the past and the present and even the characters surrounding her were different. Also lost to me were the meaning of the necklace she bought near a coaching inn and the role of the prescient Mrs Annesley. Since the story is entirely from Elizabeth's POV, the slightly delayed HEA came as a surprise for me.

Excellent!!

This was very good book. I couldn't put it down. It is now one of my favorites next to "Haunting Mr Darcy".

This Is the Good Stuff

Gorgeously written, perfectly plotted, swoonworthy Darcy, and just enough magic to make it fun without having to invent a lot of rules. And even the plural possessives are done correctly. (There's one typo, which I don't count.) No notes. Always delighted to read anything by this author.

Ethereal skip in time

Some alteration indeed… this story gives Elizabeth the opportunity to see a what if? Both she and Darcy can see and feel that their love transcended all, by whatsoever fluke of destiny, and brought them to the place and time intended. The characters are defined just enough, with little distraction of villains or intrigue, and the focus stays on Elizabeth and Darcy. The journey is creatively woven, with glimpses of alteration and a season of waiting that end’s together.

A wonderful variation!

Some Little Alteration begins with Darcy giving Elizabeth his letter in the morning after she rejected his proposal of marriage. But then everything changes. Elizabeth is struck by a falling branch, loses her conciousness and wakes up in a different reality. The altered reality makes Elizabeth reexamine her actions and thoughts, about Darcy and others. She reaches an understanding of herself and him. In her interactions with Darcy, she learns of his true character, and understands that she has misjudged him, which changes her opinion of him completely. It was easy for me to sympathize with Elizabeth and to relate to her fear that she may have lost Darcy forever. Towards the end there were some heart-wrenching events that kept me in suspense. I found the story gripping, emotional and very romantic. A 5 star read!.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Wonderful characters, great plotting, clever premise, and a touch of the fantastic. I loved the shifting facets of Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s relationship, that nevertheless retained a palpable awareness of the attraction between them.

I enjoyed this gripping story. The first half is angsty though. I recommend this very imaginative plot written by a talented author.

“Some hearts are meant to wait, but not forever. All things come when the hour is right.”

Jennifer is one of my favorite author, her story and her way of telling a story both speak to my heart. However, I have never been a fan of supernatural or mystical genre. Thus, this book stood out as quite a challenge for me.Everything seemed like a dream to me and I’m sure that Lizzy felt more than I could imagine when all the mystery actually happened to her. It was at first a bit difficult for me to comprehend the situation and Lizzy was quite outspoken right after her first accident. However, later on I was able to sympathise as the confusion between dream and reality and impression and reality are maddening.Maybe just as it was a jumping between lives that the affections shared by ODC seemed less condensed and strong to me; that Darcy professed his inclination in one of the scenarios whilst engaging to Anne made me a bit uncomfortable. On the other hand, the switch between Charlotte and Jane was quite amusing and had added a lot of fun to the story.

Truly an alternate universe

In this alternate world Elizabeth begins to learn about her own shortcomings and also begins to know Darcy as a real human being rather than the prejudiced stereotype she had previously imagined. “Sometimes, those who seem the most distant are only waiting for someone who sees them as they truly are.” At Hunsford, we leave canon as Lizzy begins to see and speak to Darcy in places he is NOT, and no one else can see him. We then find that he has been in an accident and the two of them have interesting conversations with each other and with those around them. The activities of their days become new memories for Lizzy, causing her serious confusion and upset when her canon memory tries to coexist with her alternate reality memory. An interesting Darcy, a difficult Colonel, a nasty Lady Catherine, a fascinating trip into the possibility of seeing spirits, and absolutely romantic! I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily leaving a review.

An elegant and slightly mystical variation of P&P

“Some Little Alteration” is everything you could want in a Jane Austen variation: elegant writing, proper grammar, a well thought-out story (with a touch of mystery) and all our favorite characters. A falling tree limb knocks Elizabeth unconscious, and when she wakes up the familar P&P storyline is slightly altered. (In the case of Jane, it's heartbreakingly altered.) Elizabeth eventually recovers some of her memories from the original Austen storyline, but then seems to recall elements of both the original and altered storyline as her memories. How can both versions be reconciled? Eventually, we do return to the standard Austen storyline with minor changes, and we do reach the HEA for our favorite couple. (And may I say that the final mention of Mr. Collins was shocking yet elegantly written.) I read the ebook in two days and don't hesitate to recommend it to all Austen fans.

Another wonderful Variation

This definitely differed. Jane, Charlotte and Elizabeth in Kent! Charles doesn’t love Jane - What? - it was several stories woven together but still all were P&P variations.Fascinating variation!
