About the Book
The course of true love never did run smooth...
When Fitzwilliam Darcy departs Hunsford after his disastrous proposal to Elizabeth Bennet, he does not expect their paths to cross again. Indeed, knowing the lady's true feelings for him, he makes every effort to see that they do not. But when a chance encounter leaves him stranded in an abandoned cottage with the one woman he can never have, Darcy quickly realizes there is more at risk than just Elizabeth's reputation.
Elizabeth Bennet knows Mr. Darcy is the last man in the world whom she could ever be prevailed on to marry. Until the morning he hands her a letter, his countenance as dark and forbidding as the windswept sky. Now, trapped in a snowstorm with the one person she was certain she despised, Elizabeth is startled to discover that her feelings are not at all what she expected.
But is one night alone together enough to alter the course of their future?
Can any man as proud as Mr. Darcy be expected to offer for the same woman a second time?
In this tale of serendipity and second chances, literature's unlikeliest couple must conquer pride, prejudice, and faulty first impressions in the elusive quest for their own happily ever after.
Part of the Love Conquers Pride series.

A glorious story about my beloved characters with enough twists and delicate turns to keep me wanting for more. I have not enough words of praise for the author. The book made me happy and impressed me, please write some more books...long ones Loved it❤️
the snowbound cabin is a well travelled trope but this is nicely doneA good balance of forward and backward progress for ODC.
Darcy and Elizabeth have a horrible carriage accident and realize that they still love each other. HEA is assured, but there are still a lot of misunderstandings along the way. I enjoyed this take
I am surprised this is so well done by a first time novelist. Thank you. Hope to read something else from you soon
I love P&P stories that are real variations, not just the same old scenes with different dialogue. Or half the dialogue quotes from Jane Austen. And there was very little story time given to any villains.
Loved the storyline, perhaps a little frustrating on the romance of realising and declaring their true feelings but all in all a read that I couldn't put down.
A charming variation, beautifully written, with characters from canon challenged by different events. Although sometimes I wished the characters would just talk to one another about what they really felt, I believe that in real life when people are vulnerable, they will often protect themselves from potential pain. The gradual unfolding of their love story is tender and touching highly recommended.
I liked the beginning and the end; the middle not so much. I truly almost stopped reading several times. I cannot abide such a wishy washy version of Elizabeth; you might as well make her evil. The middle third was boring. The nightmare was never explained, and she would never be so rude as to leave without saying goodbye. I am not an editor. Not a fan of this style.
A truly delightful story even though there are painful moments, both physical and emotional. I feared for both Darcy’s life and Georgiana’s because the story doesn’t have us believe all will be well. There was less of Caroline and Wickham, which made this novel much easier to read than the angst that usually surrounds these two. The reader is allowed to see Darcy and Elizabeth truly fall in love over many months, much more sensible than some stories of these two though their relationship is fraught with problems. Enjoy
I loved the story. It’s well written and captures the Austen essence, with the wonderful nature and the unfolding of characters.
Forced confinement is my favorite trope and this book starts with a good one! Very strong start, sadly this book suffers from awkward pacing, a weak plot and tedious misunderstandings that could easily be solved with reasonable communication. I found myself skimming a LOT starting about 40% of the way through, just really bored with the misunderstandings between ODC. Also I love a strong Darcy and this Darcy is a second guessing coward. There were so many scenes between them that went absolutely no where. I have to admit I only held out to the point where they finally confessed their feelings and now I’m giving up. Definitely “sweet and clean” to the extreme which is not my style normally, but if it’s yours you may enjoy it more (not saying I need smut, I don’t mind a clean book but this one was just too saccharine for me). A good editor could help a lot with plot and pacing.
I first read Ms. Altman’s P&P variation Faults of Understanding, which I absolutely loved. I began reading the current novel immediately afterward. Ms. Altman is a talented writer with a great respect for Austen’s characters. I look forward to reading more from her in the future.
I would love to give this higher marks. I found it started out pretty good in the first quarter of the book. However, then it dragged on and on. I honestly got so frustrated with it and I moved on to other books. It took me months to attempt a return to finally finish it. The last quarter of the book was very cute and had some super sweet moments, but it could not redeem the middle portion I just did not enjoy.
I loved the way this was done, great job!
It was filled with too many contrived misunderstandings. Why have E&D around each other so frequently if every build up is just for another separation? I'm ok with conflict, but there can be too many. It was an ok read but fell flat.
This authoress understands the difference in who and whom and has nearly perfect grammar. The first several chapters of this book are excellent. I know a lot of people have criticisms of the thrown together type of stories, particularly where there's a forced marriage. There's no forced marriage here. But I think that the author had a lot of great ideas and instead of whittling her thesis down to a few good ideas, she put all of her good ideas into one book. This book is super long for Jane Austen fanfiction. It also has a lot of contrivances. There's a lot of interruptions for the main characters. Honestly, after Georgiana got sick I started skimming and then I just put the book down whenever I realized that completely contrary to the norms at the time her aunt and uncle were going to leave her at Darcy's estate unchaperoned because reasons. That's just weird. So like I said, I feel like there were a lot of great ideas that if just one or two of these ideas had made it into the book as supporting the overall theme she had established, then the book would have been a lot stronger.
Though it was deep into 75% of this long book when Darcy and Elizabeth finally muster the courage and confess their love to each other, the author satisfies the reader with sweet moments between E&D. As much as I wished they professed their love much sooner, it didn’t hurt because the author wrote such precious pining. If there were a meme to describe this book, it is the one of the old lady from Titanic saying “it’s been 84 years”. It felt like an eternity before E&D finally came to an understanding (considering the amount of times they crossed paths). I did love it though and will read it again !
This storyline is new and well thought out. Errors are extremely rare and minor. My only negative is that most of the book they seem to fear the other knowing they love them, and the feel the love is unrequited. Then in one page they are flirting and enjoying being with each other even though they don't talk about feelings until much later. I don't feel the shift was warranted by what was written. There were off scene sections that I wish had been written more. Overall, I very much recommend this story.Trauma was minimalized and only displayed as necessary for plot (and accuracy of the times), which I am grateful for.
I think this is an excellent book. It was well written and the plot was well built. It was full of misunderstandings, though. Torturing so. Every time they got close to each other, I would think “WHAT NOW?!” because surely something would happen to leave them hanging. I am not going to remove a star, because I think that for the readers who love this type of book, it is an incredible one. I, a person who often hates it, still liked it, because it became a sort of joke to imagine what the author would think of next to complicate their lives. The cottage scene was at the beginning of the book and it was lovely. It did play a role throughout the book, and I am glad for it. It disappoints me when this type of plot is only used to start the novel, and then they are engaged, and nothing much comes out of using that initial idea. The proposal was so sweet.Overall, a very interesting book if you make a game out of all the misunderstandings.
Another well written variation by Jennifer Altman. No Wickham and I appreciate that! Lots of Darcy and Pemberley: a winner. I have since this first review read again this variation and though I still rate it quite high, I must concede that the misunderstandings grow tiresome. The lack of communication, the few happenstances and improprieties are also not entirely believable. You feel like shaking this Darcy to make him realise his (sometimes cruel) blunders.
This whole book can be summed up as: man and woman willfully and exhaustingly misunderstand each other at every opportunity and still somehow fall in love.
5 Stars for this story is easily given, so many missed opportunities for understanding, Sweet Georgiana so sick, and a truly organic growth of love.
Author did a great job with the plot, capturing my attention, and holding it. The constant interruptions between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, we’re not forced or stilted. Honestly I was kind of happy to see Elizabeth get a little bit of a comeuppance given her pride and prejudice. But all turned out well!
This story is very well written as with all of J. Altman novels.I gave the novel four stars because I felt there was simply too much angst for my taste. If you are a reader who enjoys the back and forth of miscommunication and non-verbal and verbal miscues between E & D, then you will love this story. It simply took much too long for them to Finally get together for our beloved HEA.
A nice tale where much could be solved alot quicker if ODC had spoken clearly with each other instead of misunderstanding what the other meant. Usually stories like this drive me mad because ODC frustrate me and I just want to lock them in a room and be done with it. This story is different though their misunderstandings seemed fair, they didn't jump fully to conclusions but just naturally came to those conclusions. I could see myself thinking the same. There wasn't unnecessary angst or fraught tension just...lack of truly clear communication but seemed fitting for the time period. How often do an unmarried couple actually have time to talk? The breaches in propriety should have been annoying but actually seemed like they might have been fair. Yes - strictly speaking chaperonage should always occur but in every day life I'm sure many breaches occurred without any fuss. As long as no one KNEW about it or issues occurred to ruin reputations people would just move along with every day life.An enjoyable read, I only wish there has been an epilogue
Don't miss this one if you love P&P variations. A very different take but so much the same. It will make you smile.
Unlike some of the variations I have read, both Elizabeth and Darcy are more true to the original characters. I neglected my housework to finish readiǹg and then was sad it was over.
Very well written with a good balance of angst and HEA. Poor proposal at Kent starts us off. A carriage accident followed by a meeting between Mr. Bennett and Mr. Darcy. Misunderstandings; sisters forced to marry and others very I’ll from kidney stones. Darcy and Elizabeth avoiding the elephant in the room. Followed by a great HEA. Highly recommend this book.
